Rely on Friends & Family for Support
Your friends and family can provide a great deal of support during your divorce and their company should be sought out frequently. With moral support you can process negative emotions and discuss issues that bother you (which may help you avoid conflict with your ex). You can also consider attending a local divorce support group, where you can talk things over with people experiencing the same situation.
Keep Your Kids in Mind
If you have children, your divorce is bound to be far more difficult. Keeping conflict to a minimum is key in this case, as children can internalize a lot of this negativity and may even blame themselves. In terms of changes in residence or schools, try to provide your child with as much notice as possible to prevent a sudden disturbance of their lives. You should also try to provide the news of your divorce and any subsequent updates with your spouse present.
Don’t Be Adversarial
While you may be resentful of your spouse, refrain from making the divorce adversarial. When it comes to communication, try to remain civil when speaking with your ex, even when you’re in disagreement. Be willing to compromise when necessary and don’t make decisions or demands to spite your former spouse. If you’re having a hard time communicating effectively, jot down important points so you can remember them later. This is also a good way to keep emotions in check.
